If you’re like me, some weekends you just want to stay home, watch your shows from your DVR and just relax. So when it comes to those weekends, I usually end up pampering myself, give myself a manicure and pedicure, do a hair and face mask. Saves me money and kills time!
Now, I love finding ingredients around the house for a homemade face mask or a homemade hair mask!
My go to face mask is equal parts baking soda and water (make sure it is paste like) put it on your face for 10 minutes, and it helps unclog your pours.
Also I am pretty sure every household has olive oil, so you just heat up some olive oil and put in your hair, (I put my hair in a bun, and then put a shower cap on) hang out for a re-run of Sex and the City, then rinse! Shampoo and conditioner after…bam you’re done.
One of my best friends is notorious for using coffee grinds, she uses coffee grinds to wash her hands (hands ever smell like garlic?) just take a tablespoon of coffee grinds, your usual hand soap and wash for 30 seconds, it will get the garlic smell or any other smell out and your hands will feel smooth, also you can throw it in your face wash every now and then for an exfoliate. I even heard it helps cellulite, haven’t tried it yet, but maybe I should!
Here are some recipes for homemade face masks
2 egg whites & 2 tablespoons of yogurt – mix – leave on face for a few minutes then rinse. You’re face should feel tighter and smoother! Make sure you use plain yogurt, no one wants a strawberry face! (though your boyfriend might, if you taste like strawberries, he’ll just want to eat your face) which if that’s the case it reminds me of an Episode of Sex and the City where Charlotte swore she could tame a horrible kisser, and he pretty much ate her face, she was left with a bruise on her chin ( I am pretty sure no girl wants that)
Next up pumpkin – pumpkin is a natural exfoliate and antioxidants, it helps calm break outs and even soften fine lines
½ cup of fresh pumpkin pulp
2 eggs
Puree the fresh pumpkin until it becomes a thick paste, then add the egg (it will act as a binder) If you’re skin is dry you can add 2 tablespoons of almond milk and 1 tablespoon of honey. If you have an oily complexion you can add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar or cranberry juice. Mix well and let the mask stay on for 15- 20 minutes – rinse with cool water and moisturize as usual.
Now for the hair!
One time my best friend Iris and I found a mask for your hair using avocados, well she had tons of avocados and we sat on her dining room floor, mashing up avocados and putting it in our hair, her dad walked in, shook his head and walked away…we looked like green monsters!
All you need is 1 avocado, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil, mix up all ingredients, apply thoroughly on your hair, let it set for 20 minutes, and use a gentle shampoo to remove the mask. This mask is great for dry damaged hair.
Beer. It’s my favorite alcoholic drink, bad for my weight…but good for my hair! Any beer will do, however a traditional ale or lager is preferred over a wheat beer, due to the hops.
Just open that can of beer, let it sit for an episode of Desperate Housewives, then when you’re ready to hop in the shower, bring that beer with you! (this might be a man’s dream come true, seeing his girl go into the shower with a beer…might sure he doesn’t get any ideas…unless he wants too) Pour the beer over your hair (while you’re in the shower of course) massage the beer into your hair, and let it soak for about 2 minutes, rinse with cool water, and use regular conditioner to help naturalize the beer smell. You’re hair should be feeling silky soft and smooth once dried or styled!
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed a day of at home pampering that saved you a couple hundred bucks! Go out for a night on the town, and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!
